We think about products, software, and platforms all day long. And we love talking about ourselves and our work. (Who doesn’t, really.) But we want these projects to be useful to people who aren’t us—as our CEO Paul Ford said, “We gave our marketing a mission…It should always help people build their careers.” It’s even in our charter.
So when we launched a card game called “SHIP IT!”, all about how to succeed at product management, we also wanted to invite our friends in the tech community to come by and play it.
About 150 people crowded into Postlight HQ for a live play-through of the game by Rich and Paul, our cofounders. You can listen to that on our podcast, Track Changes.
Then, we let everyone loose at the card tables to play for themselves. Players competed to ship products before their competitors, and got tripped up by things like “Emails from the CEO” and “pivot to video,” or boosted by strong MVPs or another player’s bad luck.
By the end of the night, we’d given out hundreds of decks, and had requests for hundreds more. We got so many requests, in fact, we had to print 3500 more boxes to meet demand. That still wasn’t enough, so we created a print-and-play version!
